Daller: Well, you got involved with Burkes Landing with Scalia. One day, he was gone. Q: Yes. The family will receive friends . But I dont remember seeing the main house. Burke: Greek revival. Its going to hell. The only thing that will save this house as a bulldozer! [laughs] But anyway, I saved it. And so shes got the bridge, and it costs money. I was living in London, and I was studying the history of art and design, or something like that, in the University of London, and he was going and he was studying art. But the upper story of the house was two more floors. So here I was with all this stuff, sending it home to my family, sending it to my sisters. Though he thought it had no chance, he called and learned that Parks had long been thinking about trying to obtain the mansion. I started with the basement. Either you buy me out, or I buy you out. George Burke is one of these dedicated keepers: He minds the Seguine Mansion, which he bought in 1981. It turned my stomach just to watch all of that gorgeous stuff just destroyed. And she couldntthey couldnt keep up with it anymore. I moved in the house, and I would come in the house, and right in the front hallway, you could always smell lilacs. People didnt want it because it had such a reputation as being haunted. He was 77. Im joining the Air Force. So I went out and I joined the United States Air Force of course. Thats how I got to know Adriana Scalamandr and the Scalamandrs. Its just a shame. George Burke. If you want to come in a business with me, John, lets make into a beautiful restaurant. So he said, Okay, Ive never owned a restaurant, but Id be willing to try it, George. So I said, Well, John, youre gonna have to put a lot of money in it because you have all the money, as being who you are. And that was only one of them. I mean, after it was finished, who cared? Daller: If they cant ride, why should they be here? Q: So part of why it closed was because. Youre coming with me. So Id say Okay, Murphy, lets go! She was something, I mean. They couldnt. And in the summer, he sits outside, enjoys the outdoors, enjoys the lawn, the grounds. And then the people that moved out left a bunch of old furniture, and these were the two that they left. And thats what I called out for was help. Burke: Well, a good example is the one right here at the end of the street. And then upstairs was like a big balcony above that porch. And thats where we are today. So we need to get help. You know, everybody knew him, and everybody, wow. So my sister Bess said, Well, come on, lets go to Florida. I restored all those buildings down in Tottenville, all those great old buildings. Because the water was in the basement for so many years, all the dampness had lifted all the floorboards and everything, and so I had to dry the house out, and replaster the walls. I said, Where are you? She said, Well, I moved out years ago and went back to Georgia. Burke: He did almost all the upholstery in the house. Daller: Well he formed that, thats the board. They were some kind of jewelry like that but I dont remember what it was. Now, this is a portrait of Joseph Seguine. And, well, lets face it, they never had any hot water over there at all. And I often wondered what happened to that brooch because I gave it to Bess. Burke: Yes, I paid off this house. But the one that I remember was a great big brooch. Burke: Her sister has it [indicating Daller]. You could see with all the houses over here, its gotten very built up. I just repainted. But, with that money, I paid this house off. So I would walk around, Id look and Id see some beautiful stuff for sale, for nothing. Theres one here, theres one there, and theres one in the other room. As a young adult, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served in the medical department, spending time in locations across Europe and Alaska. [laughs]. And then of course, being in New York and being in the thing like that, I got to be very, very good friends, with Scalamandr. And thats what this house is. Burke: Oh. So when I got it, of course, the old kitchen was inI had knocked it down because it was all falling apart. But I dreamt it and I knew every single thing about it. Burke: After I had the house, then I got the big pieces of furniture. Youd have to see the house to see what Im talking about. I said, Well, the only one I know that talked like that is Bess Seguine. She said, Well, this is me. I said, What is it, Bess? She said, I want you to come and save my house. I said, Are you kidding, Bess? I said, as a kid growing up, we were always down on the beach, looking back up at this big white house that looked like a big Southern mansion. So I rented the apartment next door, and I broke a hole in the wall. But things that, well, were thatyou needed carpenters that knew, that were good carpenters. And people were coming from all over the island. They even stopped you riding in the parks. The whole family kind ofand the ladies got too old, and they decided they were going to move and go live inI think Georgia or Virginia, I forgot. And, she said, If so, we will give you gifts. And then that was the end. But that was biga big, two-bedroom condo. Then I went looking for the big pieces. Q: Did you keep up a conversation with Mario Buatta about. Tell us about when you were born? But anyway, she said, Im not going in the house. Works at Sandvik. He introduced me all the time tobecause look at look at what he was. And Ill invest in a couple of other things that will give me a nice little income, and I wont have to worry about it. You know, everybody grew up together. It was gorgeous and very ornatewas very, very much like Greek Revival. I dont know if it ever took off. There is a stable from which he enjoyed horseback riding on Staten Island trails. And they were slate, the roof, and by walking on the slates, they broke and they slid off, and wherever they slid off, the rain poured through because it was holes. That was the most beautiful mansion. And Im glad I did what I did, about just giving it to the National Historic Trust. It doesnt happen on the North Shore because were very condensed and its a dense population. You said you started with the basement. Burke: Anyway, she was well known here on Staten Island. And as I said, I was in the military up there and we werent a big group of military, it was like a small base. I could make another funeral parlor out of that. And I said, No, lets not make a funeral parlor. I restored that, and that was an old mansionan old pillar-fronted mansionlooked like the house, similar. And from the garden, you could come back in under the porch and down into the kitchen in the basement. I mean, look, theyve been trying to get rid of the carriage horses in the city, for how long now? So they built it like an attic and it was called an attic but it was a whole complete story. Burke: And Im leaving everything thats in the houseits staying. And when they got level, he screamed, Okay, George, theyre level, theyre level! And then I put a big postI put a big cement thing on the floor. This was all field, all the way up, and she used to turn the horses loose on all the fields out there. They cant just say, The doors are open for anybody, just walk in! Somebody will walk in, and say, Oh, I like those chairs, pick them up, and take them, and theyll be gone. Troy. Yes, but it was weird. And it was called SS White [Dental Manufacturing Company]. If you were at the water looking up here, you couldnt see the house. And all the time when all the lilacs would come in the spring, and the whole place would smell of lilacs, its gorgeous, still is. Like there was old Greek, like the Parthenon, the Greek templesoh, it was beautiful. And think about it. But the basement was the summer dining rooms and summer kitchen. Restored the building, looked around, come down, bought this house from Mrs. Seguine, and then moved out of the bar and restaurantbecause I had a room upstairs in it. And my neighbor across the street, who had lived there forever, she comes over again with a couple of little plants for me. I was advised by just about everybody to give it up. Burke: Yes, but just think of that gorgeous, bigthe mansion that this was their farmhouse, up the street here, that was gorgeous. Remember him? And a lot of people kept their horses in the stables. And the only reason why this survived is because nobody wanted the farmhouse! And it did all the dental workany kind of dental work and everything was manufactured there. Mrs. Mackey. Burke: Oh, God, Mario come out here all the time. So I picked up this one building that had a little old bar next to it. Unbelievable. Theyre deciding they want to build, so they tear down and build. And what they did is they bought a whole fleet of old taxis. Sell the other half to Billthat was my brother and you and George, move with me to Florida. So we all thought that was a great idea. And so I had all that stuff in my apartment. But it only reached a certain point of it, not in the very beginning. The one owned by the steel companywas that a beautiful house! I was an interior designer. George was an engaged conversationalist and even better listener. Q: What grabbed your eye? And the post is still there and the staircase is still in good shapebut thats still in the house, now, down there. I went over there, and it was standing up sleeping! What the hell do you think it was? Well, it doesnt matter, her name. And their mansion, the White people that owned SS White, the White family, owned right across the creek, there, where the Captains Quarters [private development] are. But anyway, I had come back to America. And one day I got a call from Mrs. Seguine. Burke: Theyll come in, but youll have to have somebody as a guide. Parks appraised the grounds and house and divided the value half and half. And over the years, it became just prohibitive to try and do. Mon-Fri, 7am-6pm MDT . Anyway, there was three things that I found by doing some worklike, giftsI forget what they were. With that old fabric, theres enough to make drapes for one window. One woman wouldnt go it, cant think of her name. Q: [Laughs] Yes. She said shell keep the doors locked and call Linda if anybody wants to get in and take anything out. In this interview, Burke talks about working with designer Mario Buatta, along with the House of Scalamadr, to select furniture and fabrics to decorate the home in the Victorian style. We were doing other parties at the time, the only thing we still maintain is the White Party. And we were great gardeners and she had always come over in the spring, and she gave me little cuttings of all the flowers, and the different things. And no ones going to be able to talk about it, and point things out, and say where it came from, or whats the history behind it. Burke: One was a necklace with a heart on it. George Burke. Daller: But it feels like home. And he was stationed here, in St. George, and he would come home and wed live in the house. You dont have to worry about, sleeping on your couches and all that kind of stuff, and, you know, pulling out fake beds, and that kind of stuff. We all got coupons. So thats where I got most of the stuff thats here in the house today. And so they lost it. Oh, we were crabbing. Because there was a big double parlor like this on one side of it. Q: And so, what sort of vision do you have for, you know, the next the next forty years, for how the grounds are maintained and how. Linda? Daller: He enjoys the whole house. And Id go downtown and Id wheel and deal for a bottle of whiskey. The son and his wife took over Scalamandr. So I figured, oh, shit. So dont worry about it. Ghost in the houseif shes gonna live there, she could do some cleaning up, do some dusting. Thats ittheres no more of them. Of course, she loved the smell of lilacs. I loved Alaska. Im gonna save this house. [laughs] And I lived there for a long time. Burke is joined in this interview by his niece, Linda Daller. But alls I know, they closed in New York and they moved out there. But I had all this beautiful carved stuff. They cant develop it. So the next day, Im up and Im outside. And I hope whoever is in charge of itLinda will probably be here in charge! And where to get the good buys, and all that kind of thing. Daller: He did the sofa upstairs as well. But what she did is she sold off parcel after parcel in order for her to live here in the house because she had no income. Did you know that from? So, Id do that. If you dont want to come dont show up. And he said since hes been here, he has nobody here. And is there a way where, according to how you would like the house to be maintainedwould everything stay in its place? In fact, he was just a few years older than I, and wasnt it last year we were trying to locate him? And through all the years that the old lady had this woman taking care of her, the lilacs were always in bloomwhen they were in bloom, they were in the house. Yes. I went around and I got it and shipped it all back home. He had the military ship the items back to family members in New York City, a perk of military service that made moving his collection back to the States possible. But the picture in the locket was all crumbled up. But I restored all that. Probably. Q: Yes. And that was the Air Force. They couldnt handle it, the clientele that came in. George was a resident of Broxton, Georgia at the time of passing. Burke: But anyway, when my time was up in the service, they shipped me back here to, Burke: Alaska, and I stayed in Alaska. Everything has to be environmentally done properly, so by the time you figure it out, youre spending more money, when youre making no money because you have no horses. The front porch was up high. Im giving nothing away. And the whole big building used to be a big private home, and then they had made it into a restaurant. Theres too much business going on here. So were talking about this and talking about this. The woodwork, the moldings, the parquet floors. I dont need The Death of Cleopatra hanging above my fireplace. But this is too much for you, George. But that was a big improvement, putting in the kitchen, because there never was a kitchen in the houseand where the kitchen is now, that was the laundry room. His favorite is the White Garden Party held in early spring, at which everyone wears all white, the Fall Country Barbecue and the formal Christmas gala. I was born on Oct. 11, 1930, one of nine siblings, to an. He was from Central America somewhere, and he just believed in everything had to be right. Well. And you cant control it from the grave. And Ed was very good at taking dents and things out of cars and he could spray paint. Burke: Yes, I had to go down in the basement, and put a post, and then I had to jack up the stairs. I said, No, no, no. And hes the one that did my portrait upstairs. Daller: See, now you learned about kitchens. Q: [laughs] How did you figure out what needed to be done with the house? So she finally died. I remember you always loved it and liked it. So itll be part of Staten Island that people, maybe fifty years from now when theres not a spot left, theyll all come out and theyll look and say, Wow, this is what it used to be.. The oldwhat the hell was itgrocery store. Luis was great. Then I got shipped to Europe. That is the only thing that worries methat the house will be stripped. Well, what are we talking about? Q: And did you keep records of the restoration process? And she wanted to start running things and taking things over. She was on TV complaining about it. But the other house, one of his friends was pushed down the stairs. IN THE CARE OF. And Luis Caizares painted that. It was a mess of a mess. Also, surviving are her siblings Peggy . Burke: Scalia. So I still had to get up every day and go to work. Burke: I dont find any difference living here. It occurred to me that my home was one of the very few old mansions still existing on Staten Island and surely could be designated as a historical home, so I requested my attorney contact the Department of Parks. The Old Bermuda Inn. Also survived by many in-laws, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. George had a wonderful career with the MBTA, starting as repairman and becoming the Superintendent of the Red Line until his retirement. And they said, Oh my god, George, what are you Oh, and who else was that? That was a great house. And I worked there for quite a while, and I lived in the Bronx. And then I said, well, now Im going to buy a home. Then she got to the point where she couldnt keep it anymore. And then, on the side of the house in the back, there was a little piece built out. And then when we realized we were broke, all my brothers joined the military, got married, moved away. Msgr. So, I dont know. So we brought that point up a few times. I saved it years and years ago. She said, Now you can save it., And I said, Well, I can save it. But I still have a lot of it. So this house tells a particular story, a long history, but it cant tell the history of the other houses because they were so different. And thats where she was. She said, You saw her in your dream. I said, Holy shit, I said, you think that was her? She said, It could have been her. I said, Then she went like that and chased me out of her house. She said, That was her. Because the other way, my uncle was digging into whatever a little bit of savings he had, in order to pay. I was born right in the hospital across the street, and grew up 90% of my time on Staten Island until I became old enough and I joined the military. Q: No, that covers it! George Burke purchased the Seguine Mansion in 1981 in an effort to preserve its history and restore it to its former beauty, (Staten Island Advance/Jan Somma-Hammel). I put the post on it up under the floor where the newer posts in the staircase was upstairs, and then, when I took the jack away, it sat on the post. Yes, but that was all the legal aspect of it. I, being the youngest, of course, seeing everybody growing up. Daller: The stables. When I bought it, I didnt know what was that ones house. So when he left the apartment and came to Staten Island, things started to move back into different sisters again until he was ready to relocate it again. Q: So he knew how much work it would take over the years and what a relationship would be like to. And, I had a lot of time over there in London and so I decided, Well, hell, Im going to go to school and learn something. So I took interior design. So thats my uncles hope for it as well. Q: Can you tell me about moving the collections here, out of storage and out of your sisters houses into this house? Q: Was it Mario that suggested the life tenancy agreement? So I said, whew! Thats the usual setup, I think, for historic houses. Burke: And what is a shame islike, you take [one of our former boarders], she has two horses that she used to keep here all the time. Daller: Well, its just the fact that the South Shore has gotten very built-up. I bet I left the cellar door open under the stairwell, from the basement, and I bet thats the soap Ive got in the washing machine that smells like that. He painted that for me. My brother, he come in and he said, What are you, nuts? So I went out and I said toI had two roommates, and I said to my roommates, Wheres my box? And they said Oh, well, Sergeant Joiner came in and took it. I said, Oh, no! I went running out. We would like to offer our sincere support to anyone coping with grief. Get out. Thats the only way to explain it. It would have been spectacular but greed set in, and thats what they did. I mean, Captains Quarters, instead of building all those condos down there, it would have been beautiful to have another stately home there. I frequently told her how much I really longed to own the house. Everybody smelled like that. Q: Andif this is something that you cant discuss, let me knowbut, for example, if you decide to repaint, like you did in this room, is that something that the board fundraises for?
